2020: An All-virtual Presentation

The 2020 CLEO Technical Conference was held as scheduled in a first-ever, all-virtual format. The conference reached almost 20,000 registrants from 75 countries.


By the end of the conference, 33,322 minutes of programming was presented. 248 Technical, Poster and Dynamic ePoster Sessions equated to more than 2,000 scientific presentations — all delivered in a combination of live and pre-recorded sessions and demonstrating a wide breadth of advancements and discoveries. The session recordings are now available on the conference website for individuals who registered for CLEO. 


Plenary presentations covered diverse topics from flexible display technology to silicon photonics, and featured these speakers:

  •  John Bowers, Director of the Institute for Energy Efficiency and Professor, University of California Santa Barbara, USA
  • Paul Kwiat, Professor, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and Director of Illinois Quantum Information Science and Technology Center (IQUIST), USA
  • Bill Liu, Chairman and CEO, Royole Corporation, China and USA
  • Kaoru Minoshima, Professor, The University of Electro-Communications, Japan

There were 13 special events, market updates and Product Showcases conducted virtually at CLEO  including:


  • Lidar Design Trade-Offs and Selection Criteria for Autonomous Applications
  • M&A and Financing Activity in Sensors and ADAS and Autonomous Mobility
  • The Brightest Light Initiative: The Future of Ultrafast Lasers in the United States; and 
  • Manipulating Quantum Systems: An Assessment of Atomic, Molecular and Optical Physics in the US by the US National Academy of Sciences.
