Photonics Meets Free-Electron Science

Organizers
Charles Roques-Carmes, Stanford University, USA
Ido Kaminer, Technion, Israel
Aviv Karnieli, Stanford University, USA

This symposium explores the novel physics of interactions between free electrons and light in nanophotonics and integrated photonics platforms. This emerging field, known as free-electron quantum optics, redefines the free electron as a new quantum particle, opening new avenues for research and applications due to its high spectral tunability, ultrafast operation times and compatibility with various quantum optical information processing paradigms.

The session highlights the role of photonic structures in shaping free-electron interactions, leading to potential applications like versatile light sources, mini particle accelerators and sensitive detectors. It also underscores the significance of techniques such as cathodoluminescence and electron energy-loss spectroscopy for nanophotonic materials characterization. With emphasis on experimental platforms like scanning and transmission electron microscopes, the session aims to inspire innovations in areas like ultrafast and quantum effects in free-electron radiation, tunable short-wavelength emitters and topological states in photonic crystals.
