Few high-power laser applications have attracted controversy in the same way as nuclear fusion. But with the National Ignition Campaign due to go live within the next few months, residual doubters and dissenters may soon be silenced. Viewed in this context CLEO provides a unique opportunity to discuss laser fusion at the dawn of a new era of scientific understanding and exploitation.

Before the conference started, let me overview some upcoming interesting talks that I already know something about. These are presentations by the Photonics Group at the University of Toronto.

Finally, I managed to discipline myself and planned my Monday attendance. As always, I ran into a difficulty to decide what is more interesting and important. Using the online planner, I ended up marking one or a couple of sessions that are of special interest to me per each time slot. How am I going to handle all this? I guess, I have no choice but spreading my wave function to cover several sessions at the same time.

Don’t miss Celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Laser Symposium – which will take place on Sunday, May 16, at 3 p.m. There are going to be many distinguished presenters. 50th Laser Anniversary happens only once: the next significant one will be in 50 years, which is way too far from now. A more informal related event – Lasers Rock! Concert – will take place on Tuesday, May 18. It is amazing that there are so many artistic people among scientists to fill in the program of a whole concert! Lasers indeed rock. And laser scientists do too!

Perhaps, many of you know how it is easy sometimes to get too involved in your everyday activities, hardly ever finding time to look around and see what other people in your field are doing. It is high time for a conference! And not just another conference, but the largest conference in the field of Optics – CLEO/QELS. I am looking forward to all these exciting talks and events, to seeing my friends and people I used to work with while at graduate school, to meeting new people, to establishing new connections and potential collaborations

In the lead-up to CLEO I have been trying to do some work in the MID-IR wavelength range. I have been waiting for some CaF2 lenses that were due to arrive a few days ago only to find that they were held up by the ash plume from Eyjafjallajokull’s recent eruptions. It turns out that the distribution center from where my lenses were to be shipped is in Germany.

I am a bit ashamed to admit it, but this is really the first time that I have done any pre-conference homework. What I am referring to is looking at the conference schedule, browsing the website, looking through abstracts, and even using the online planner to make an itinerary.CLEO Conference, CLEO: Applications

This will just be my second visit to San Jose. Last time was for CLEO 2007 and I pretty much didn’t leave the downtown area (just ping-ponged back-and-forth from the convention center to my hotel). For this visit, I’m interested in taking some time to explore what the city has to offer when there is some conference down-time. My hope is that any blog followers with more experience in Northern California, or who are native to the area, will help point us tourists in the right direction.

Networking is a key to success for any specialist, especially for a scientist. I would like to encourage students: don’t be shy. Try to use every single opportunity to meet new people, establish new connections, discuss your research with the specialists in the field.

Photonics group at the ECE Department at the University of Toronto has been working to enable practical realization of all-optical devices for telecommunications, lab-on-a-chip, sensors, and many other applications. We are happy to have the Emerging Communication Technologies Institute at the University of Toronto that provides us an access to the state-of-the-art electron beam lithography apparatus and microfabrication clean room facilities.
