Pulse shaping is an integral part of every femtosecond laser, from chirped pulse amplification (CPA) to pulse compression. This Tech Talk will discuss current challenges in (a) pulse compression, (b) pulse characterization (metrology), and (c) control of nonlinear optical processes such as selective two-photon excitation and selective vibrational mode excitation. The talk will present both time and frequency pulse representations. Computer simulations using a free pulse-shaping program will illustrate how the pulse is transformed through pulse shaping.
