Advancements in optical, laser and visualization technologies continue to make significant contributions in improving global vision health and eye care. For example, development and wider adoption of OCT technology over the last decade has revolutionized the way ophthalmic care is provided for a range of ocular pathologies including AMD, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy etc. Improvements in laser based and visualization guided technologies continue to enhance safety and clinical outcomes in various surgical procedures. However, there remain many challenges in the field of ophthalmology and there are many interesting ongoing developments that could address these problems. The topical review will cover some of these exciting technological areas including, cellular level structural and functional imaging of the retina, ophthalmic imaging for early detection of neurodegenerative diseases, prosthetic retina, enhanced surgical planning and treatments and machine learning based applications.
