The latest innovation that has caught the imagination of the world at large is 3-D printing. As many of you may know (see the OPN article - where we found the image below) 3-D printing isn’t a single technology but several different technologies (almost all use Optics) that have been around for a decade or so. In the same way as I began yesterday’s entry, I’d like to congratulate those honored at today’s CLEO plenary session, in this case the new IEEE Photonics Society and OSA fellows. Following the award presentation, Prof. Alan Willner gave an overview of the National Photonics Initiative, which has been created to help raise awareness, increase collaboration, and drive investment in photonics. The takeaway message concluding Prof. Willner’s presentation was to be sure to spread word of the crucial importance of photonics!

First off, congratulations to the award recipients honored at the Plenary and Awards Session I at Tuesday’s CLEO meeting. The session was highlighted by presentations by Prof. Paul Corkum, who spoke about the development and science of attosecond photonics, and by Prof. Stephen Harris, who gave an excellent history of parametric down conversion. Both talks gave some great insight into the basic science of quantum mechanics and photonics.
