Can't wait for CLEO 2015 and this special year, "International Year of Light"

By Howard Lee

When you look at the lineup of the plenary session of the CLEO 2015, you can absolutely tell how exciting CLEO is this year. For the plenary session, there are five Nobel Prize winners (Stefan Hell, William Moerner, Eric Betzig, Steven Chu, and Hiroshi Amano), well-known scientist and past OSA president Tony Heinz, as well as the International Year of Light Celebration (IYL) and Society Award winners Shuji Nakamura (2014 Nobel Prize winner in Physics) and Miles Padgett (leading scientist from UK on angular momentum of light). All these plenary talks are “must-go” special events taking place Monday to Wednesday (11-13 May).

Other than the plenary talks, there are plenty of exciting tutorials and invited talks throughout the week. Here a few that I am looking forward to attending:

  • Federico Capasso, Harvard Univ., USAbr
    Nanophotonics on Metasurfaces
  • Benjamin Eggleton, Univ. of Sydney, Australia
New Directions for Chip-based Nonlinear Optics
  • Stefano Lupi, Universita di Roma, Italy
    Dirac Plasmons in Topological Insulators
  • Yuri Kivshar, Australian National Univ., Australia
Nonlinear Effects Driven by Optically-induced Magnetic Response
  • Nader Engheta, Univ. of Pennsylvania, USA
Nanophotonic Metastructures: Functionality at the Extreme
  • Philip Russell, Max-Planck-Inst Physik des Lichts, Germany
Optomechanical Nonlinearities in Microstructured Optical Fibers
  • Ayman Abouraddy, Univ. of Central Florida, CREOL, USA
Multimaterial Chalcogenide Fibers and Devices for the Mid-IR

There are also a lot of special events for researchers and students to get together for networking, and celebrating the science of light.

Dr. Shekhar Guha (Air Force Research Laboratory) and I (Howard Lee, Caltech) will host a reception and a networking session for the Optical Material Studies Technical Group of OSA on Monday, 11 May, from 18:30 to 19:30 pm (Room 211 B/D of the San Jose Convention Center). All of you are welcome to join us for this networking event to discuss new ideas on optical materials. In addition, there is an OSA Technical Group Poster Session hosted by the “Nanophotonics”, “Optoelectronics”, and “Optical Fabrication and Testing” technical groups. This will be a good time for exchanging new ideas and recent findings on these specific topics. Other than that, the Conference Reception on Tuesday will also be a great time to get together.

For the students, there is also a “Newport Student Lounge” (Tuesday, 12 May - Thursday 14 May during the Expo) for you to spend time with different students from all over the world discussing the sciences, job opportunities, ideas, etc.

I hope you will enjoy all the activities at CLEO 2015. I look forward to seeing you at CLEO: 2015, and discussing with you exciting research and new finding in photonics.
