Enhancing Your Career in Optics
Tuesday, May 6, 10:15 a.m.–12:30 p.m.
Moderator: Eric Van Stryland, CREOL, USA
If you’re a student member of the Optical Society of America (OSA), you won’t want to miss this year’s OSA student member program.  Four outstanding leaders have come together to create an informative session that will help you build a successful academic and professional career.  Each will share their insights on opportunities in the optics field, and the important role professional societies play during your years as a student and throughout your working life.

Part I: Leveraging Your OSA Membership into a Lifetime of Advantages
10:15 a.m.–10:45 a.m.
Speaker: Alan Willner, Univ. of Southern California, USA
Dr. Willner is an active volunteer with many scientific societies. Journal editing, leading technical meetings and conferences, and support of student programming are among his many contributions. Dr. Willner has lent his time and expertise to many OSA governing bodies including its Board of Directors, Board of Editors and conference steering committees. In 2006, he served as the IEEE-LEOS President and was a strong advocate for joint programming with peer societies. In this session, Dr. Willner will discuss the relationship between his volunteer activities and professional career, and will highlight ways to integrate professional societies into your student life and throughout your career.

Part II: The Importance of Meetings and Conferences in Career Advancement
10:45 a.m.–11:15 a.m. (5 minutes Q/A)
Speaker: Greg Quarles, VLOC, USA
Meetings and conferences are excellent venues for presenting research, networking with peers and establishing contacts with leaders in the scientific community.  Dr. Quarles will highlight successful strategies for utilizing meetings to advance your career. He will discuss the importance of oral and poster presentations as well as networking at exhibits and during conference receptions.  Additionally, Dr. Quarles will discuss the positive impact of serving on planning and review committees, and will offer suggestions on how students can become involved in technical meeting committees.

Part III:  The Ins and Outs of Getting Published
11:20 a.m.–11:50 a.m. (5 minutes Q/A)
Speaker: Joseph H. Eberly, Univ. of Rochester, USA
Hard work, quality research and well written papers are the key to getting published.  Those published in distinguished scientific journals have honed their skills at both research and written presentations.  Understanding how the submission, review and publication process works can be invaluable.  Dr. Eberly will discuss his volunteer activities in support of OSA publications, and review best practices for submitting your work.  He will also describe the importance of serving as a volunteer reviewer and the path to becoming the editor of a scientific journal.

Part IV: My Experience as an OSA Volunteer
11:55 a.m.–12:25 p.m. (5 minutes Q/A)
Speaker: Stephen D. Fantone, Optikos Corporation, USA
Dr. Fantone is a dedicated and distinguished OSA volunteer which includes serving as OSA’s Treasurer since 1996. His presentation will highlight his experiences as a volunteer and will offer insightful suggestions on how to leverage your OSA membership to obtain your personal goals.
