Precision Applications Using Ultrafast Lasers

Precision Applications Using Ultrafast Lasers

This session will cover the following topics:

  • Neurophotonics with Femtosecond Lasers: from Imaging to Functional Studies
  • Ultrafast-based Laser Machining in High Volume Manufacturing

Tom Hausken, Senior Industry Advisor, OSA Industry Development Associates (OIDA), USA

With over 35 years in optoelectronics, Dr. Hausken focuses on industry activities at OSA—the Optical Society.  This includes OIDA (OSA Industry Development Associates, now a trade association activity within OSA), where he held a position earlier in his career.  For 13 years until 2012, Dr. Hausken led market research and strategy consulting for lasers, image sensors, and a range of other photonic products at Strategies Unlimited. He was also a telecom policy analyst at the U.S. Congressional Office of Technology Assessment, and held R&D and production positions at Alcatel and Texas Instruments in photonics and electronics.  He has a PhD from the University of California at Santa Barbara, in optoelectronics.

Marco Arrigoni, Director of Strategic Marketing, Coherent, USA
Marco Arrigoni received his MSEE from Politecnico di Milano in 1984. After working for a few years in Italy, in 1988 he Joined Coherent in Santa Clara, California, where he is currently the director of strategic marketing for the scientific market segment. His 27 year tenure at Coherent includes several different positions in R&D, international sales and business unit management - both in Santa Clara and Tokyo (Japan).

Ronald Holzwarth, Menlo Systems, USA

Dirk Mueller, Director of Strategic Marketing, Coherent, USA
Dr. Dirk Müller is Director of Strategic Marketing at Coherent Inc., a world leader in industrial lasers used for scientific, materials processing and micromachining applications.  In this role Dr. Müller explores new business opportunities in micro-electronics and aligns laser-based solutions to emerging manufacturing needs.

Before his current appointment at Coherent, Dirk Müller was Product Line Manager for picosecond lasers at Coherent and prior to being PLM he was Director of Sales and Marketing at LUMERA LASER.

Early in his professional career Dr. Dirk Müller worked as a Senior Research Scientist for Corning Inc. During his time at Corning Inc. Dr. Müller was working on the characterization of photonic-bandgap fibers and participated in demonstrating the lowest single-mode transmission loss in a photonic bandgap fiber as well as the highest waveguide birefringence ever measured in an optical fiber at that time.

During his professional career Dr. Müller has published in numerous journals, such as Science, Nature, Physical Review Letters, Optics Letters, as well as trade journals such as Laser Focus World, Photonics Spectra and Laser Technik.
