2011 Innovation Awards Winner
2011 CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Award Goes to Applied Research and Photonics, Inc.
Honorable Mentions Include Products from AdValue Photonics, Inc. and ID Quantique
The CLEO: 2011 co-sponsors (APS, IEEE Photonics Society, OSA) and Laser Focus World are pleased to honor Applied Research and Photonics, Inc. as the recipient of this year's CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Award. The award recognizes the company for the development of a highly sensitive, low-power terahertz scanning reflectometer capable of directly measuring both the concentration gradient and kinetics of permeation of an ingredient across the thickness of a substrate in real time and in a non-invasive fashion.
The winning entry, the Award-winning CW terahertz scanning device, will have impact in life and physical sciences and enables non-invasive measurement of various surfaces.

In addition to the award given to
Applied Research and Photonics, Inc., two other products were recognized with honorable mentions. They are as follows:
- AdValue Photonics, Inc.
2-Micron Q-Switched Fiber Laser
For the development of a 2 micron Q-switched fiber laser enabling novel applications in LIDAR, mid-IR wavelength generation, sensing, materials processing and more.
- ID Quantique
Advanced System for Single Photon Detection
For the development of an InGaAs/InP-based photon counter for telecom wavelengths that will enable further developments in applications
Applied Research and Photonics will accept the award at the CLEO Plenary Session on Monday, 2 May at 6 p.m. at the Baltimore Convention Center. Honorable mentions will also be acknowledged during the Plenary Session. All winners and finalists will be highlighted in official conference materials on-site (Conference Program, Exhibit Buyers' Guide) and in a CLEO press release, as well as on signage at the conference.
Each year, the CLEO/Laser Focus World Innovation Awards Program honors the most timely, ground-breaking products in the field of laser science. Designed to showcase some of the most significant new products in the field, Innovation Award entries are evaluated on criteria critical to product success: impact, functionality, life expectancy, effect on the optics industry, innovation and patents or trademarks.
The Innovation Awards Program allows CLEO exhibitors to showcase their latest products and services entering the marketplace. This award provides exhibitors the opportunity to reach the top industry decision makers in attendance at CLEO, the premier laser conference. It also offers a unique promotional opportunity with CLEO's partnership with Laser Focus World.
