Attend the Power Lunch and participate in high-level discussions with industry leaders who will provide insight on how to navigate through a challenging market. You will have the opportunity to speak one-on-one with experienced leaders representing different markets who will share their wisdom on surviving and growing a business during difficult economic times. In addition, the leaders will share their insights on how to strategically position yourself in an uncertain market.

An interactive question and answer period will follow the table discussions. Registrants can submit questions in advance to be discussed during this time by all of the industry leaders. Find out how to manage your company and your job during an economic downturn, stay connected to company revenues for job security, and seek new business ventures. Registrants should send questions to cstech@osa.org.

Special Student Offer – student seats at $20 on a first come, first served basis. Seating is limited for student members of the sponsoring societies of the conference (APS, IEEE/LEOS and OSA) wishing to take part in the Power Lunch program. The $20 tickets are available to students registered for the conference.

Each of the ten industry leaders hosts a table, so space is limited. Box lunch included. Regular tickets are $40 each and advance registration is required.

Milton ChangMilton Chang, Managing Director, Incubic Management, USA

Milton Chang was president/CEO of Newport and New Focus. He is currently managing director of Incubic Management and is semi active in his investment activities while writing a book to share his business experience. Milton came from Hong Kong, earned a BS in EE with highest honors from the University of Illinois, and MS and PhD from the California Institute of Technology, and he was awarded Distinguished Alumni by both universities. He is on the Board of Precision Photonics and mBio, a Trustee of Caltech, a member of the Board of Visitors of theUniversity of Illinois College of Engineering, and a member of Committee of 100. He writes business columns for Laser Focus World and Photonics Spectra.

Timothy DayTimothy Day, CEO, CTO, Chairman of the Board of Directors, Daylight Solutions, USA

Dr. Timothy Day is a cofounder of Daylight Solutions and serves as the CEO and CTO for the company. Dr. Day has over 20 years' experience in both technical and business management in the photonics industry. He has led engineering, research, product development, manufacturing, and marketing operations. He started his career as a cofounder of New Focus, where he served from 1990 through 2004. During his time at New Focus, he was involved in all aspects of the company’s history, concluding with his work on the sale of the company to Bookham Technology PLC for $338M. While at New Focus he also contributed to the raising of over $500M though public and private equity offerings. From 1990 to 2009, while at New Focus and Daylight Solutions, Dr. Day has developed extensive patent and product portfolios and transferred numerous products into production, both onshore and overseas. Dr. Day has extensive technical knowledge and experience, and is considered an expert in the field of photonics.

Dr. Day holds both a BS and an MS in Physics from San Diego State University and a PhD in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University.

John DexheimerJohn Dexheimer, First Analysis Private Equity, USA

John Dexheimer focuses in several areas, including 1) optical and sensing systems and applications, 2) enterprise software-services, and 3) alternative energy solutions. In addition to his association with First Analysis, he has been president of LightWave Advisors since 1999. John has advised or led investments in more than 100 completed company financings and mergers in communications, software, electronics, materials, and optics, including transactions involving Philips, SAIC-Telcordia, JDS Uniphase, Novell, EMC, EDS, United Technologies, Cisco, KLA, Intel, Raytheon, and Schott. As a managing director of C.E. Unterberg, Towbin from 1990 to 1999, he led the IPO of Uniphase and its early acquisition growth that transformed it into an industry leader. During this period he also managed the firm’s equity research and venture capital programs. Prior to 1990, he was with GE, Data Resources Inc., and Broadview International. Since 1999 he has helped materials and optics firms receive over $800 million of equity investments and consulted to a number of large corporations and leading venture funds on acquisition strategies and start-up investments. He has helped found start-ups from lab spin-outs and was the first external investor or board member in several optics firms including New Focus, FONS and Altitun (now ADC) and co-founded kSARIA, a mil-aero optics manufacturer. He is a board member of Princeton Lightwave, a supplier of advanced optical systems for industrial, military and security applications; an advisory board member of Indo-US MIM Tec Pvt. Ltd., a leader in advanced materials processing; and a board member and treasurer of the Opto-Electronics Industry Development Association (OIDA). He earned an MBA from Harvard University and a bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota, Institute of Technology.

Fred LeonbergerFred Leonberger, Principal, EOvation Technologies LLC, USA

Fred Leonberger is the Principal of EOvation Technologies LLC, a technology and business advisory firm. He serves on the Board of Directors and/or Advisors for a number of venture-funded photonics companies and is a Senior Advisor at the MIT Center for Integrated Photonic Systems (CIPS).

Dr. Leonberger previously served as Senior Vice President and Chief Technology Officer of JDS Uniphase Corporation (JDSU), a leading optical components supplier, and was a co-founder and the General Manager of UTP, an optical modulator company. He has also held management positions at MIT Lincoln Laboratory and United Technologies Research Center. He is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, and a recipient of the IEEE Photonics Award. He received the BSE degree from the University of Michigan, and the SM, and PhD degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.


Chris MyattChris Myatt, Founder and CEO, Precision Photonics Corp., USA, Power Lunch Organizer

Dr. Christopher Myatt founded Precision Photonics Corporation in 2000 to bring high precision and high sensitivity optical technology from the laboratory to market. Recently, he has guided the incubation of an emerging medical diagnostics technology, which is now the mBio Diagnostics division of the company. Dr. Myatt earned a BS in Physics and a BA in Mathematics at Southern Methodist University, and a PhD in Atomic Physics at the University of Colorado. Chris did his post-doctoral fellowship at NIST and is CEO of Precision Photonics Corp.

Gregory J. QuarlesGregory J. Quarles, Director of Research, VLOC Inc., USA

Dr. Gregory J. Quarles is currently employed as the Director of Research for VLOC Incorporated, a subsidiary of II-VI Incorporated. Greg has been with VLOC (and formerly Lightning Optical Corporation) for over 18 years, developing new solid state laser materials and laser devices for medical, military and industrial applications. Dr. Quarles is a graduate of Oklahoma State University, where he earned a dual BS (math and physics), an MS and PhD degrees in Physics. Prior to joining VLOC, Greg was a research physicist at the US Naval Research Laboratory in Washington DC. While at NRL, he managed all materials characterization for the Electro-Optics Branch and led a team in the development of optimized sources for solid state laser systems for IR countermeasures. Greg has been an Associate Editor for Optical Engineering for eight years and for the IEEE Journal of Quantum Electronics for three years. He is also a Fellow of the OSA and a Fellow of SPIE, and has served as Conference and Symposia Chairman for various laser-related conferences for The Optical Society, the IEEE Photonics Society, and SPIE. During his previous 26 years of lasers and materials research, Dr. Quarles has been awarded five patents related to solid state lasers and has published over 100 peer-reviewed publications and three books and chapters.

Don ScifresDon Scifres, Managing Director, SDL Ventures, LLC, Chairman, SDL Capital, LP, USA

Don Scifres received a BSEE degree from Purdue University, and MS and PhD degrees in Electrical Engineering from the University of Illinois. He then joined the Xerox Palo Alto Research Center to set up a new laboratory for the study of semiconductor lasers and light emitting diodes. While at Xerox, Don held positions of Manager of Optoelectronics and Xerox Research Fellow. Don holds over 140 U.S. patents and has published over 300 technical articles including contributions to the books Molecular Beam Epitaxy (Pergammon Press, 1980) and Diode Laser Arrays (Cambridge University Press, 1994). Among other contributions at Xerox, Don and his colleagues developed very high power semiconductor laser arrays leading to the founding of SDL, Inc., (formerly Spectra Diode Laboratories, Inc.) in 1983. Under his direction as CEO and Chairman of the Board, SDL, Inc. became one of the fastest growing companies in the fiber optics and optoelectronics industries.

In February 2001, SDL, Inc. merged with JDS Uniphase Corporation. At the time the merger was announced in July 2000, SDL, Inc. had grown to approximately $500 million in sales, with over 2,000 employees in eight locations worldwide. SDL's market cap was $41 billion, making the merger the largest technology deal ever done at that time. Don was Co-chairman of the Board of JDS Uniphase Corporation, and Chief Strategy Officer, and in charge of Mergers and Acquisitions.

In February 2003, Don left JDS Uniphase and founded SDL Ventures, LLC and SDL Capital, LP, investment companies based in Los Altos, California.

Don has been awarded the IEEE Jack Morton Medal, the IEEE Robert Noyce Medal, the IEEE Third Millennium Medal, the IEEE John Tyndall Award and the IEEE LEOS Award for Engineering Excellence. He also received the Optical Society of America Edward H. Land Medal, the American Physical Society George E. Pake Prize, the Rank Prize from The Rank Foundation, and the Eminent Member Award from Eta Kappa Nu National Honor Society. Don is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering and a Fellow of IEEE and the Optical Society of America. He is Past President of the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society of IEEE and has served as a member of the LEOS Board of Governors for a number of years. Don also served as President of LEOMA, the Lasers and Electro Optics Manufacturers Association. He is on the Board of Directors of several non-public companies.

Martin SeifertMartin Seifert, President, Nufern, USA

Martin Seifert has been a business leader for more than twenty years. Additionally due to his technical background, he is named on a number of Nufern fiber, chip, and laser patents. Prior to Nufern, Martin was President and GM of Lucent Specialty Fibers, a position which came as a result of his turn around of the floundering SpecTran specialty optical fiber manufacturing company and its subsequent sale to Lucent. In the early 90s he started and managed a successful combined hardware and software business at Rockwell where he was also involved with merger, acquisition, and divestiture activities. Prior experience was as Chief Operating Officer of Schweitzer Engineering Labs, and manager of the specialized global high tech drives and control system service provider organization within Bucyrus-Erie. Martin holds a BS degree from the University of British Columbia.

Kurt WeingartenKurt Weingarten, Chairman, Founder, CTO, Time-Bandwidth Products, Inc., Switzerland

Kurt founded Time-Bandwidth Products Inc. (TBP) in 1995, pioneering the commercialization of saturable absorber mirror technology for ultrafast diode-pumped solid-state lasers. A spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich, he bootstrapped the company to commercial sales of >2M$ in 1999 based on a broad portfolio of picosecond and femtosecond lasers, then founded a new company GigaTera to develop >10 GHz repetition rate lasers for telecom system applications, raising 9M$ in venture funding. GigaTera was acquired by and integrated into TBP in 2003 after the telecom crash. TBP currently focuses on market applications ranging from biotech and semiconductor test & measurement to industrial picosecond micromachining applications. Kurt received his PhD and MS in Electrical Engineering at Stanford University, and BSEE from Georgia Tech. He has published numerous articles in technical journals, is inventor on approximately 8 issued patent families, and is a long-time member of OSA and IEEE.

Mark WippichMark Wippich, Principal, MPW, LLC and Partner, LightWave Advisors, USA

Mark Wippich has been Principal of MPW, LLC since 2007 and a partner with LightWave Advisors since early 2009. Mark has 20+ years of experience in the Optics-Photonics-Sensing Solutions space. Mark has completed Mergers and Acquisitions, Business Development Advisory, and C-Level directed projects for many clients. Previously, he was with New Focus (now Oclaro) for 10 years in various senior engineering and business roles as an early employee from bootstrap phase through its phases of hyper growth and ~$600M of private and public equity funding, and several mergers and divestitures. Among his roles were new product developments (including 3 patents), operational integration across multiple sites, and constant advisor to senior management including in M&A.
